Right now you’ve probably forgotten what your friends and family look like below the waist. And the number of video calls you’ve dialled into. Like coffee pots and trips to the fridge, you might’ve lost count.

In the beginning, Skype, Zoom, and Hangouts were rafts in the storm, a lifeline to cling onto amidst the chaos. And for the most part, they still are; you can still attend birthday drinks, spill wine on your cream carpet during yet another virtual quiz, and catch up with your colleagues over lunch. But after hitting what feels like your five hundredth call, both during work hours and down time, the dividing line between work and play has been smudged.

Well, the thing is, there’s more video calls to come. The good news? It doesn’t have to be this way. To help you out, we’ve put together some ways for you to make your Zoom life more zen, and re-establish the variety of old, albeit in new ways.

  1. Embrace them!

The last thing we want to feel is like we’re going through the motions. Mix up your video calls and take screenshots of your colleagues, friends or family. Create a bank of memes ready to go, or send them as their next birthday card.

2. Play dress up

Jolt your colleagues from their early morning slumber with an expected surprise. Whatever you have to hand, craft yourself a costume. With all that excess toilet roll you might’ve stockpiled, there’s one costume that comes to mind.

3. Go further than a quiz

A quiz used to be a welcome change of pace in our pre-lockdown lives, but with it becoming the go-to Saturday night event, you might need to start switching it up. There’s plenty of activities that work well over video call such as Scattergories, listening parties (share your computer audio only) or Jackbox.

4. Surprise and delight

One way you can keep your friends and colleagues entertained is hosting a drawing class, hiring a magician or mid-week yoga. While we aren’t at the office, it’s important we keep our social life and culture at work ticking.

5. Go all in

If your kids and pets are waiting in the wings for your meeting to conclude, why not bring them centre stage for a call or two? Introduce your family to the whole company, they’re welcome.

There! Now you’re a video calling pro, there’s really no excuse for talking while on mute any more, is there? 😉
