This Friday we celebrate International Day of Families. By now, you’re probably well accustomed to celebrating things a little differently. Birthdays from afar, Mother’s Day from afar. Well, now we think of it, pretty much everything from afar. The current situation across the globe has revealed plenty. The wonders of video calls (in moderation), the need to brush up on our cooking skills and just how beneficial a walk around the block can be. But above all it has shown us the importance of family. With a supportive group behind us, we’re able to feel more optimistic about the world, more secure, and have something to look forward to when life returns to normal, whatever that normal looks like.
With all that’s going on, there’s no better time to reflect on the importance of not just our immediate family, but friends too.
While we may not be able to celebrate in the ways we’re used to, there are still ways to show our appreciation, and reaffirm the importance of sticking together, right now more than ever.

Relive memories of times gone by. Dig up old photo albums, scroll through your camera roll, and reminisce over the good times. To make things more interesting, why not try to recreate some of your iconic family photos from quarantine?
2. Make plans for ‘the other side’
Half the fun is in the anticipation. Pencil in a time for the family to celebrate when things go back to normal. Or the new normal, at least.
3. Send a surprise in the post
We might be doing most things differently at the moment, but one thing that remains constant is the power of personalisation. Show your loved ones that you’re thinking of them on Friday by sending a hug they can stick on the fridge.
4. Have a virtual picnic
For those of you fortunate enough to have some outside space, use the tools at hand. Gather the family together via video call and enjoy the warm weather (fingers crossed) while you wine and dine.
5. Keep a lockdown diary
Whether you want to share your daily musings with the family is up to you, but if you decide to keep a diary, not only is is great for your mental health — it’ll provide plenty of entertainment down the line. And it doesn’t have to be hidden away in a notepad, why not give vlogging a go?
