What to write in a get well soon card

When someone you care about is feeling sick, they can often feel alone, depressed and even a little isolated. A get well soon card from someone who cares about them will lift their mood immediately and remind them of all the good things that are waiting for them once they’re feeling better.

Whether you’re sending a get well soon card to a friend, loved one or work colleague, you’ll want to include a heartfelt message wishing them a speedy recovery. Struggling to find the right words to say it best? Our simple guide will show you how to strike the right message at life’s toughest times.

Why do we send get well cards?

We send get well soon cards to family, friends and colleagues to show our support, let them know that we’re thinking of them and hopefully give them a lift during their recovery. Whether it’s from a physical illness, mental health struggle or other personal challenge they’re facing in their life. The right message in your card can raise their spirits and mood, and remind them they’re surrounded by people who love them.

If the person who is sick is pretty much guaranteed to recover, then a get well soon card is spot on. However, if the person has a terminal illness or is undergoing a difficult treatment like radiotherapy or chemotherapy, then a ‘thinking of you’ card may be more appropriate.

Similarly, if you don’t know exactly what’s wrong but you want to send a card to let them know you care, a ‘thinking of you’ card is often the best option. Or you could send a get well soon card with a simple message, such as ‘you are in my thoughts.’

When should you send get well cards?

When to send a get well card can depend on what type of illness or personal struggle your friend, family member or colleague is going through. If they’re in hospital, sick at home or recovering from surgery, then it will really give them a boost to receive a card that they can appreciate as they get better. A card is a positive way to connect with family and friends during a challenging time in their lives, and an opportunity to offer your support in any way they might need.

Messages to make them giggle

Nothing cheers you up more than a good laugh when you’re feeling ill. Try to think of inside jokes that your loved one or friend would appreciate. Or just things that you know will make them giggle – like puns or little jokes.

“I just knew you’d end up getting some time off work sooner or later!”

“It seems even viruses can’t resist your charms! Wishing you a speedy recovery.”

“I know you’ve always liked laying around in bed all day, but this is taking it a bit too far! Get well and come back soon.”

Messages to show your support

When you’re writing your message, remind your sick friend or loved one they have your support and that you’re here for them, on the phone or in person. You’re ready to do whatever they need, whenever they need it.

“Thinking of you at this tough time – your strength and positive outlook are amazing. I am so proud of you – stay strong!”

“You are in our thoughts every day and we hope that you get better soon. Just let me know when you need me and I will be there for you.”

“A get well wish from all of us, and to let you know that we’re all here for you, whenever you need us.”

“Thinking of you every day and sending lots of love, hugs and kisses. Let me know how I can help.”

Messages to lift their spirits

A message focusing on the future and the exciting and happy events they’ll be able to enjoy once recovered is a great way to lift their spirits if they’re feeling less than 100%. Plan for a future meet-up or gathering, and recall the good times you’ve enjoyed, as well as all the new ones to come

“I hope that you feel better very soon. And when you think you’re up to it, dinner is on me!”

“Can’t wait until you’re up and about again. You’re doing amazingly and I’m so proud of you.”

“Wishing you a very speedy recovery and sending good wishes that you will be doing all the things you love very soon.”

“You’re doing all the right things and I just know that you’ll be back to your old self in no time.”

Messages to make them smile

Making someone smile when they’re feeling at their lowest can make all the difference on a bad day and be a powerful aid to recovery. Perhaps you could include an inspiring quote in your get well card?

“You have to hurry up and get better – I can’t wait for us to hang out again!”

“Get well soon please – I miss you!”

“You’re in pretty good shape for the shape you are in.” – Dr. Seuss

“It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.” – Mahatma Gandhi
