A special message for Godparents

After much thought and consideration, you have chosen the perfect godparents for your child. Now, you want to celebrate how special they are by sending a card to mark the occasion and give your heartfelt thanks. A godparent card with a message containing genuine appreciation lets your chosen people know how grateful you are that they have agreed to take on this important role.

For some inspiration, just scroll down and read our quick guide to writing the right messages for godparents.

What are godparents and what do they do?

The role of godparents can be traced back as far as the 2nd century AD. Traditionally they are sponsors chosen when someone, often a baby, receives the sacrament of Baptism – a rite of admission into Christianity. They can be family members or very close friends of the parents.

Baptisms and christenings are still very popular. These days you can ask someone to be a godparent if you don’t have an association with a particular church or faith.

Godparents at a christening will make a promise to encourage their godchild to live their life in a Christian way and be responsible members of their society and faith. For secular parents, choosing godparents still includes them in the child’s life. They may also be asked if they would take guardianship of the child should anything happen to the parents.

Special cards for special people

Religious or not, selecting a godparent is a very important decision. Whether you choose family members or very close friends, they are usually viewed as part of the your family.

Solemn promises will be made to be a part of the child’s life forever and to help guide them as they learn and grow. So, their responsibility can’t be overstated. With this in mind, you will want to mark their new title with a card full of your gratitude and joy. But, how will you do it?

TouchNote has many perfect godparent cards to choose from. You could decide on a card decorated by any one of our incredible designs, or you could upload a photo of the godparent and godchild together.

Thoughtful messages go a long way

Choosing godparents is an emotional experience all around. The godparents will be honored to be chosen and the parents will be overjoyed that they agreed to it. It’s a huge ask too, so pour your heart into a message that says: “You mean the world to our family and you will be part of our lives forever.”

Here are some suggestions to help you write a message that captures what you would like to say to these special people.

“Thank you so much for agreeing to be godparents to our precious (son/daughter). We know that you’ll always be there for (him/her) if we are not around.”

“We are blessed and very lucky to have you as godparents to our child. We know that we can rely on you to support and love (him/her) as (he/she) grows up.”

“You are such an amazing person and we know you’ll be an inspiration to (name of child) and guide him well throughout life’s journey. Thank you with all our hearts.”

No reason you can’t be funny

It might be a big responsibility, but there’s no harm in bringing a bit of humor to the table by having some fun with your baby’s godparents (if that’s the relationship you have with them).

You could add some laughter to a traditionally mushy occasion with some funny quips that sum up your relationship. They’ll still know how much it means to you that they have been asked to be a godparent.

Here are some gently humorous messages to get you going.

“(Name of child) already has a very responsible godmother, so it makes perfect sense that his godfather will be helping him get into all sorts of mischief as he grows up!”

“You are so going to be my favorite godparents and I am looking forward to coming to live in your house when my parents throw me out (in about 15 years!). Thank you in advance.”

“Thank you for being my godparents. You can teach me all the things that mum and dad don’t know, as well as the things they don’t want me to know!”

Write your message with a religious tone

It’s not always a given, but godparents are often appointed when a child is christened and you may feel that a religious message would be more appropriate for this occasion. If that’s the case, why not turn to the Bible and use one of its many verses in your card to celebrate and commemorate this union of the family?

We have suggested three Bible verses to help inspire you.

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” 3 John 1:4

“Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.” John 16:24

Choosing a godparent is both a massive decision and a joyful occasion. It marks one of the most important events in a child’s life, as well as that of the parents themselves.

Commemorate and celebrate by sending godparents cards that perfectly capture how thrilled and grateful you are that they have agreed to take on this incredible role.
