What to write

What to write in an Christening card

Writing the perfect message in a Christening card might feel a bit daunting. You want to say just the right thing so it will be appreciated both on the day by the parents and in years to come when the baby has grown up.

The first thing you might wonder is whether to address the card to the baby or the parents. Either is acceptable. It makes sense to address your message to the parents now, but it’s more fun to write directly to the baby so they can go through the cards when they’re older and read the messages for themselves. Our advice? Whatever feels right for you.

Then, should you keep it serious and religious, or is it OK to be more down to earth or even humorous? And does it make a difference if you’re a grandparent, Godparent, family member, friend or, colleague?

There is a lot to consider here, but don’t worry, our straightforward guide will help you decide on the best message, one that is genuinely heartfelt and just right for you. From simple messages to religious quotes, our easy walk-through to writing your Christening card will set you on your way.

What exactly is a Christening?

A Christening is generally a Christian ceremony where a baby is officially given his or her name and becomes a member of the Christian Church. It’s also a great excuse for friends and family to get together and celebrate the baby.

The majority of children are Christened in their first year of life, although the most popular age is around three or four months old. The little one usually wears a special gown or outfit purchased for the occasion.

During the ceremony, the child will be baptized with water from a font in the church, and Godparents who have been selected beforehand will step up, pledge their support of the child during his or her life and promise that he or she will be raised in the Christian faith.

What to write as a Godparent

A Godparent at the ceremony will promise to be there during the child’s life. So it makes sense to emphasize this when you’re writing your Christening card as a Godparent. You could add that you are really honored to be asked to take on this lifelong role. As a Godparent it might be better to address your message straight to the baby.

  • “It is a genuine honor to be your Godparent. I will never be far away, and always ready to lend a hand whenever you need it”

  • “I wish you a long and blessed life filled with warmth, love and happiness. With lots of love and best wishes from your Godparent on your Christening day”

  • “A very happy Christening day to our gorgeous Godchild. We will always be there for you as your loving Godparents.”

  • “I am so honored and proud to celebrate your Christening day and excited to see you grow and prosper on your journey through what I am sure will be a very happy and blessed life.”

What to write as a family member

As a family member you’ll probably play a significant part in the baby’s life right into adulthood. When you write your Christening card, you can promise to give the baby your support and wish them a long life filled with happiness and love.

  • “Happy Christening day with hugs and kisses from your Auntie, Uncle and all your cousins.”

  • “To our darling granddaughter/grandson, you bring joy to our lives and make us smile every day.”

  • “To our son, daughter-in-law and gorgeous granddaughter/grandson on this Christening day. Have a wonderful journey through your life together.”

  • “Wishing you lots of love on a special day for all our family. We are looking forward to making many more happy memories together.”

Religious messages

As Christenings are religious ceremonies, a religious message can be a good choice. It’ll be especially appreciated if the family is religious themselves. This could either be a direct quote from the Bible, or simply a message that has a religious emphasis. However, don’t feel as if you have to write a religious message yourself if it makes you feel uncomfortable. The parents will appreciate any Christening card message that comes from the heart.

  • “I pray that you find love, blessings, peace and happiness from above, all the days of your life.”

  • “I wish you all joy and happiness on this very special occasion. May God keep you safe, loved and cherished every day of your life.”

Quotes from the bible

  • “May the Lord give His angel charge over you, to guide you in all your ways.” – Psalm 91:11

  • “I have no greater joy than to hear my children are walking in the truth.” – 3 John 1:4

Funny or humorous messages

Christenings are religious events, but that doesn’t mean you have to keep it serious in your Christening card message. It’s perfectly acceptable to make your card lighthearted and fun, raising a smile or a laugh – from the parents right now and the baby in years to come.

  • “Congratulations on your Christening, the day when a stranger in a dress tried to drown you and everyone just laughed, got their phones out and took photos.”

  • “Don’t worry – you’ll never have to wear that Christening outfit again – promise.”

  • “Happy Christening day [baby’s name]. Looking forward to the free food and Champagne – it’ll make up for sending you birthday gifts for the next 18 years.”

  • “Happy Christening and cheer up, when you’re 18 you can legally change the name they’re going to give you today!”

Generic messages

Keeping it simple is no bad thing if you feel more comfortable with that – a straightforward message full of warmth will be just as welcome as a lengthy and flowery greeting.

  • “Thank you so much for inviting us to your baby’s Christening. We wish you all a lifetime of love and happiness”

  • “Happy Christening day [name of baby]! We wish you joy, love, peace and prosperity.”

  • “Congratulations [name of baby] on your Christening day. Very best wishes for a fabulous future.”

  • “All the very best on this special day and may you enjoy a long and happy life wrapped in love and filled with blessings.”
