Ways to show support to your LGBTQIA+ friends and family

June marks pride month, a yearly celebration that promotes the equality and visibility of the LGBTQIA+ community. This occasion stems from the Stonewall Riots of June 1969 – a landmark event in history which kickstarted the fight against homophobia and campaign for equal rights.

You might be wondering how you can best be there for the LGBTQIA+ community during this time of celebration? Whether you identify as LGBTQIA+ yourself or simply want to empathise with a loved one, we have come up with 5 ways you can show your support during pride month.

Remind them you’re proud of how far they’ve come on their journey

Coming out is not a one time event. Members of the LGBTQIA+ community are faced with the option of coming out in every new situation they enter, whether that’s with a new colleague or a new neighbor.

Pride offers you the perfect opportunity to remind your LGBTQIA+ nearest and dearest of how proud you are of their continued strength. Here are a few messages that do just this:

“Coming out can be a long road but I’ll be with you every step of the way”

“It takes courage to show the world the real you but you’ve done it and we love you for it!”

Do your research

Sexual identity can be a complex topic and if you’re not part of the community, it’s normal to feel confused. Especially as LGBTQIA+ history and culture is not taught in schools.

If you have members of your family or friends who are part of the community, it’s important to learn as much as possible about pride and its significance. Don’t be afraid to be honest about what you don’t know – ask questions and do research. It can go a long way to making those close to you feel heard and accepted.

Invite them to a pride event

Whether it’s a BBQ in a garden surrounded by rainbow flags, or a tipsy karaoke night, show you care for your LGBTQIA+ loved ones by extending a hand and hosting a pride event!

Congratulate them on embracing their true self

Transitioning can be a daunting time in a person’s life and it’s important you show your support on their journey with some words of gentle encouragement.

“The past you would be so proud of the new you”

“Uncomfortable beginnings are often met with wonderful endings”

“New name, new style, new pronouns… but the same wonderful you”

Help a friend in need

Pride month is focused on celebrating the visibility of the LGBTQIA+ community, however you may have a loved one who is yet to openly share their journey with the world. So why not send them a caring and subtle reminder that you are, and always will be there for them.

Here are some perfect examples:

“The world is tough but so are you”

“Never be afraid to shine like the star you are”

“I love you just the way you are and so should you!”
